Les ondes gravitationnelles n’existent pas mais néansmoins la « découverte » de LIGO aura une fonction très importante : la relativité générale sera abandonnée. C’est parce que les ondes gravitationnelles, si elles existaient, réfuteraient la mécanique quantique (et on n’abandonnera pas cette dernière) :
