No, I do not hate the US. I lived and worked there for several years first in Boston then in New York. I believe there is plenty we could import from your country but also plenty we must reject. I do not hate the US only aspects of her.

I hate the America of the christian fundamentalists who want children to be taught the bible version of creation, genesis, as a fact. The very same ones who want teachers who do not share their narrow revisionist and obscurantist views on sexuality and religion to be sacked.

I hate the America of the neo-cons who stole an election and then sent thousands of American youth to die in vain in Iraq ; neo-cons who do not look after their veterans (a majority of homeless in the US are ex servicemen and women) but are always ready at any opportunity to wrap themselves in the flag for political gains.

I hate the America of the death penalty, of state murder, with its huge crowds of hypocrites who gather outside the jail where the execution is going to take place, bible in hand, chanting their vile thirst for blood, wallowing in revenge and hatred.

I hate the America of Fox « news », that cathedral of disinformation.

I hate the America who rightly criticised the Soviet Union for her lack of democracy while at the same time helping financially and militarily the establishment of many dictatorships in Latin America.

I hate an America which since the fall of the Berlin wall and the desintegration of the Soviet empire is so drank of her own power that she wants to impose her views and policies on the entire world.

What I love about America, first the generosity of many of her citizens, but also her beautiful varied landscape, her greay constitution, her taste for the positive, her joie de vivre, her respect for entrepreneurship and of course so many of her authors, directors, poets, painters, philosophers, political activists...

Abraham Lincoln wrote, « Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power. »

The same could be said about nations.
