Jessica Watson 16 y/o sailor

16 year old sailor Jessica Watson has told Prime Minister Kevin Rudd that her Australia Day message to the nation is « live your dream ».

However Mr Rudd has cautiously urged other young would-be explorers to finish school first before embarking on a similar round-the-world venture. The prime minister relayed the 16-year-old’s message during his speech at Canberra’s Australia Day citizenship ceremony on Tuesday.

Mr Rudd said he had spoken to Ms Watson when she was in the seas off South Georgia Island somewhere in the south Atlantic.

She had rounded Cape Horn and her boat’s main mast had hit the water four times the day before.

Her parents had been living with the anxiety of not knowing if their daughter was okay or whether they would receive a call from search and rescue because her emergency beacon had gone off.

During the phonecall, « I asked young Jess if there was any message she wanted to pass onto the nation. Her message was simple, her message was live your dream. Live your dream, » Mr Rudd told the gathering. « But before we see a squadron of 16-year-olds set sail around the world, let me also add what she also said was important for her - other practical ambitions including finishing school, getting a driver’s licence, ... and wait for it, getting a skipper’s certificate which I thought you might have needed before you went to the south Atlantic.

»But not for our young Jess,« Mr Rudd said. The prime minister described Ms Watson as no ordinary young Australian. »She is an extraordinary young Australian," he said.
