The German government policy is to encourage construction of 10 gigawatts of coal fired generation to displace aging nuclear plants and provide baseload backup for wind and solar power.

As it turns out, the power gap, created by the shutdown of eight nuclear power stations, will be largely filled by coal. However, coal is experiencing a new renaissance not just in Germany. Indeed, CO2 emissions in the EU as a whole are likely to rise 43 million metric tons this year because of increased coal burning at power stations, according to Barclays analysts.

In the past, storage plant operators used electricity purchased at low nighttime rates to pump water into their reservoirs. At noon, when the price of electricity was high, they released the water to run their turbine. It was a profitable business.

But now prices are sometimes high at night and low at noon, which makes running the plants is no longer profitable. The Swedish utility giant Vattenfall has announced plans to shut down its pumped-storage hydroelectric power station in Niederwartha, in the eastern state of Saxony, in three years. A much-needed renovation would be too expensive. But what is the alternative ?

Mais à quoi bon discuter, vous avez des convictions qui s’apparentent à des dogmes religieux.

Votre but, c’est la décroissance alors ne venez pas tenter de nous enfumer avec vos pseudo solutions à la mordmoilanaoeud,vous êtes incapable de répondre à la demande énergétique , un point c’est tout.

A noter que les règles environnementales aux USA sont bien plus strictes qu’ici, ce qui accélère encore la transition du charbon vers le gaz... le shalegaz qui fait si peur à Mme Michu, ici, grâce aux « experts verts »
